ONLY ME!
It has been an interesting day thus far. First I got home last night around 1:30, and at that time I began studying for my Physical Exam midterm that I had at 1 this afternoon. I called it quits around 2:30 and fell asleep. I was too stressed to sleep and kept waking up at various times. I forced myself to get up at 8:30 to start looking at some more Micro. I had my once a term breakdown...my poor mother gets to deal with that. Like she doesn't have enough to worry about, and then I call her crying. So here comes the good part...
We get all dressed up (see picture)
so we can go meet our first real patient. These are actual people from the community who come in and we get to test them. It just depends on who you get and which test you pull. This really cute old man looks at me and motions for me to come in and inspect him. The clinical tutor tells me to go pull my test. I was so happy when I pulled what I wanted (inspection of the head and neck). The sheet also had two minor tests that I had to perform which I got eye muscles and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). So everything goes smoothly. I take his blood pressure, inspect the head and neck. Now on to DVT. I do the first leg. Then I instruct the patient to lift up his other pant leg. He just starts cracking up, pulls up the pant leg to reveal his prosthetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome, Melissa. Really stellar. (For some reason I hear the ladies at the hospital reading this and dying laughing...) Too bad there wasn't a video camera because the expression on my face was classic!!! Oh my goodness. Moral of the story: always do a brief inspection of your patient before you start doing the tests. I just still can't believe I didn't notice. I was too nervous. Alright, I have to run. I have to look over the stuff for this Micro exam. It's going to kill me. I am nowhere close to where I need to be. Please say your prayers. ~M
