Turtle Watching!!
So last night was the big turtle watching, and it was a lot of fun! We boarded a bus to go to to the north of the island. It took us almost 2 hours to get up there, but we got to see all sorts of fun things like all 3 rum factories located on the island. Rum distilleries smell AWFUL!! We arrived at Levera Beach around 8:30. The researchers were there waiting for us and had all these rules that we had to follow. No cameras was the big one. The turtles follow moonlight so the flashes throw them off or something. I was so sad that I couldn't take pictures. I found a picture that looks a lot like what we were doing last night so that's what is posted here.
We were looking at the Leatherback turtles!! They are huge animals, around 6 feet long. All we could do when we got to the beach was sit and wait. We brought towels and sheets to sit on so the 8 of us just chatted. We didn't have to wait too long. Around 10:30 they brought us down the beach to where one of the turtles had come to lay her eggs. It was a SUPER long process. She didn't start heading out to the ocean til around 1AM. We were going to be able to go out and see her swim off in the ocean. However, at that moment another turtle came up to lay her eggs! We had our fill at this point, so we crawled in the bus for the long ride home. I guess our bus driver got really bored and didn't like the fact that we were all sleeping. He continued to point out landmarks to us at 2 in the morning!! "If you take a left on this road you will go to the chocolate factory!" Then when that wasn't enough he started telling us jokes. I was about ready to die!! All I wanted to do was sleep, but I couldn't! So I crawled in my bed at 3:30AM. My bed could now be mistaken for a sand pit because I was covered from head to toe but I was too tired to shower. Class this morning was BRUTAL! I don't even know how I got out of bed before noon. Sometimes I surprise myself. Things today have been uneventful. The only good news is that we're getting a new car! It's about time! That thing was falling apart. Well I have to run. I need to get a few things done and then I have IEA elections. My term ends tonight!!!
