Back in action!
I apologize for being MIA for the past couple of days. They have been rough. As of now things are MUCH better. It’s just that part of medical school is keeping your mind and body rested and fit for the challenge. I haven’t been doing too well with the mind or body part. I haven’t been able to sleep. I slept a total of 8 hours in two days (never good). Part of the not sleeping is that I am so nervous about all of this work I have to do. Plus the other thing bothering me is that I just want to come home. I really shouldn’t let the work get to me like that. I can only do so much in one day, and I have got to keep myself healthy. It’s just that for some reason I have become a perfectionist in medical school. Well I broke down and had a good cry (and I HATE to cry). My girls were definitely there for me. After all, we are all stuck on the same island and going through the exact same thing. They told me that I was probably the most diligent worker they have ever met, and one of the smartest people at this school. What a compliment! Then they convinced me to take a couple of hours off and go to dinner. I needed the break. It was great to get out and be social for a while. It was also great to have a good meal and not school food. Well of course it took forever since we are in Grenada so I got nothing accomplished, but maybe it was for the best.
Ok, now on to the fun stuff…ANATOMY LAB. Tuesday’s dissection was interesting: face and scalp. We definitely took Eve’s face off! Dr. Curry was at our table AGAIN! I had prepared so much for this lab, and yet I still got made fun of by him! Keep in mind this was after night #1 of no sleep. I was doing some of the dissection and questioned him if I was looking at the parotid duct (part of your salivary glands). He told me that 95% of teaching is confidence and 5% is knowledge and if I would have told him it was the parotid duct he would have believed me. We got deeper into the dissection, and it was the parotid duct. Then according to him I got “cocky” so he started shooting off questions to me. Luckily I knew them (and answered them with 95% confidence and 5% knowledge). He does all of this stuff in such a joking manner, but I wonder how serious he is! You can never tell with those British! I really hope that I wasn’t being cocky. That’s just not even in my nature! The other good news is that once again I was selected to be a facilitator for the Biochemistry small group sessions. I guess that means I did my job well the last time! Plus, I really enjoy doing it. Well I better go. I need to do a little bit of work, and then try to get some sleep!
