A trip to the shack (AKA morgue)

Wow! What a day. Today was my Pathology rotation at the hospital. If only I had known what I was walking into...
The doctor brought us into his office when we arrived so I simply assumed that we were going to be looking at slides or something boring. He sat us all down to prep us for the autopsy that we were going to observe. A six week old baby was found dead in its home and today was the day for the autopsy. I was scared when I thought about seeing an autopsy on some old man, but a baby! I was really worried about how I would handle the whole thing. We followed the doctor out of his office. We walked for what seemed like forever (yes, I'm being a little over dramatic but I need to set the scene) and ended up right by the cemetary (which is located behind the hospital). To my right was this random shack. I guess it is what you would call the morgue?? I'm still not really sure and it will forever be a shack to me. We all went in and had to wait for the mother to come identify the baby. I almost cried when they took that baby out and saw the poor mom's face. I just had to keep reminding myself that the baby was now in heaven and everything was ok. I won't go into any details about the autopsy itself. I will say it was one of the most interesting things I have ever witnessed. It definitely wasn't the awful experience I had pictured it to be. Even though it was a sad situation, I enjoyed it. I learned so much today. It is absolutely amazing what you can learn from a body. I was lucky to have the experience. I now must get some serious work done as I am so behind in my studying!!
