First hospital rotation
This afternoon was my first hospital rotation, and as always it was quite an experience. Today I was assigned to the Pediatric Dept. We were required to dress and wear our lab coats. I can't describe to you how hot it is wearing a lab coat in a facility with no air condition. It's possible I sweat as much today as I did yesterday climbing the volcano. Ok, that is a little exaggerated, but I was dripping sweat in the ward. We met with our physician, a lady named Dr. Cato. Her grandfather was the first prime minister of St. Vincent and the hospital takes his name. She gave us a quick run through of what was expected and then assigned us a patient. Our patient was only 18 months old so we had to interview the father which is hard. After taking history, we examined the poor little thing and then had to report back to the doctor. We left out all sorts of pertinent information so then we had to go back to the father and ask everything we forgot. Whoops!! The baby had pneumonia which was one of my possibilities, but I honestly didn't think she had it. I have to run. One of the people in my hospital group is supposed to send me the picture of us in the hospital. I will post it as soon as it is in my possession. Now it is time to study.
